Pack Repair/Replacement

I recently returned from a nice section-hike of Shenandoah (70 miler), only to find that the shoulder straps of my ULA pack were coming apart where they attach to the main body of the pack. Upon taking it to REI to have it repaired earlier this morning, I was told that it may not be repairable. The shoulder strap is made primarily of mesh on the bottom, and therein lies the major problem. The mesh is a single piece from the bottom of the pack all the way up the back and to the underside of the shoulder straps. I was curious to know if anyone knew of the best way to repair my pack.

If I should need to replace my pack, (which I hope does not come to pass) what should I get? I have a torso of 16-17", usually carry around 30-35 lbs, and I’m normally only out for 3-4 days at at time (Weekend Warrior)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You do have a problem in that Brian Frankle of ULA is out hiking somewhere and won’t be back until Dec. 1. However, you should still call ULA customer service as he does have employees there who, I’m sure, can advise you on repairs and/or send replacement parts. I’m not surprised that REI would have no idea how to repair a ULA pack. REI is used to dealing with heavy, bombproof gear.

The FAQ section of the ULA website, http://www.ula-equipment.com/faq.htm, shows where dealers are located. They are all along the AT, including one in Damascus, VA. Contacting one of them might be better than ULA customer service right now.

I also had a problem with my ULA. I emailed Brian, but got an answer from Casey, who, I guess, works for Brian. He told me to send the pack back to them for evaluation sometime near Dec 1st, when Brian plans to return. That’s the best they could do.

Good luck with your repairs. However, if you find that you need to replace your pack, take a look at GoLite packs. I have their Infinity pack, ~3200 ci, 2#4oz, and I love it! I’m going a little lighter than you, 25-28# for 4-5 days, but I think that their packs would hold up well to the extra weight.

The trail goes right by the front door of the Outfitter (Mt. Rogers) in Damascus. They carry what thru-hikers want. Dave and his son are knowledgeable. Look at Golite and Granite Gear packs. (I like my Moonbow Gear Gearskin, but it takes time to order)

That’s why I suggested the OP check out the ULA dealers on the ULA website. Mt. Rogers is one of them. They should be able to fix or replace the pack without having to wait for Brian to get home from his hike.
