Packin' a tent - Appalachian Trail

hey,

For those of you who’ve packed a tent along; Do you keep it in its own stuff sack, or fold it and stow it directly in your pack? Seems to me that would make packing it easier and more flexible, but I wonder about damaging the shell or fly.

I keep mine in a sack ostly because it wet and dirty. You also want to put it in according to what is the heaviest thing. Lighter on bottom, heavier up high and close to your back. Bag, sleeping pad, clothes, tent/food or food/tent and small stuff like the stove so it won’t get smashed on top. No damage unless you have a sharp pokey thing in your pack.

Definetly use stuff sack that comes with tent or compression sack. You would be surprised how much reduction in size compression packs make in tents and sleeping backs. Plus you have added protection to both if placed within these sacks.

I would suggest Zip locking or some other containing device for all of your other pack items, makes for easy identification and storage of stuff, plus waterproofing is ehanced as well as food smell contamination is reduced on items you do not want to smell like food.

Almost everything in my pack goes into a stuff sack. The tent goes into the stuff sack it came in. I put all food into another stuff sack. First aid is in another. Clothing goes into zip lock freezer bags. Get the picture. It keeps me organized.

The way I see it is… your backpack is one large stuff sack. If you eliminate all the little stuff sacks your things come in, it’s quite a bit of weight. The only thing I use a stuff sack for is my down sleeping bag. And that is a sylnylon one for weight reduction. I use a Henry Shires Tarptent so if it gets wet I just hang it on the outside of my pack and it dries while I hike. The tarptent is only 1.85 lbs. so it’s quite light. The rest of my things in my pack stay fairly dry as I use a raincover over my pack. I use to keep my extra clothing in a large freezer bag, but then found out this wasn’t necessary.

I wrap mine in the ground cloth and then strap it to the outside of the pack. That’s worked really well for me so far. The tyvek protects it plenty. I wrap it like a burrito.
