If you post what you are plannig to bring then we can help you a lot more. If you are only donig 75 miles then weight is not that big a deal. I still would let neels gap go though your pack. On my thru they got my pack even lighter then it was already. I hope this helps.

Hi, Smokeeater, I unerstand that Aqua Mira beats every other treatment, to include filters, so start with that not obvious choice. For spring rains, I’d take an umbrella; I like Golite’s Chrome Dome. If you use trekking poles (and I suggest you do), consider taking Etowah Tyvek gloves, as if there are cold rains, your hands will be exposed for the duration. The rest is fairly obvious. I don’t think you’ll need insect repellent. Have a great hike, Rodknee Dangertrail (I’ve a journal in T.J.com, under my last name, Phipps. Did AT 4 X & other trls., for what that’s worth.)

I carried DEET in 02 and was glad.Carry a water filter because you may find streams low with the drought and need to pull rather than dip water. Rule of thumb is 3 lbs of food per day. Whisperlite stove with medium fuel bottle. 2 synthetic T shirts,2 shorts ,3 pr socks. Stuff sack for food and cookware. Cookware is 1 spoon, 1 pot, maybe a tincup and a green scrubby. Pack things in the pot to close up space. 1 Nalgen bottle 25 -35 ft of cord for bear line Pack heavy stuff on top and lighter on bottom. Ideal is sleeping bag at bottom then cloths then food and then water on top. Bladder with drinking hose and an extra mouth piece. Pack should be worn with belt tight. 70% weight on belt. Shoulder straps are just to keep pack from falling away from your body and shifting. Zrest ground pad can be put on bottom of pack or laced along the outside. This is just my opinion as these options worked for me.

Two other must haves: toilet paper and a plastic trowel

a good sturdy stick from the woods can dig a good ‘leave-no-trace’ hole!..yep!..i’d vote for saving ounces every way you can…(lighter hiking is more fun!)…but do take care to carry enough for safety (i think staying warm and dry is the main thing…and it can get cold even in may)…but that ‘umbrella idea’?..AMEN AMEN!..i LUVVVVV my go-lite!..walkin’ under that thing in a nice spring rain is SOOOOO ‘cozy’!..have fun!

Unless you’re going to dance around the forest and start singing, “I’m Singing in the Rain” I’d leave the umbrella at home.
