Painter Branch - Appalachian Trail

Has anyone ever camped at Painter Branch, which is after Davenport Gap on the way to Hot Springs? Let me know if this is a good site. I noticed from on line pictures that the Groundhog Creek Shelter looks very shabby.

I’ve camped there on two occasions in the past - there are a couple of good campsites next to the stream in a pleasant wooded “shelf” part way up the long climb to Snowbird Mountain. It’s far enough away from I40 so that road noise is not an issue. Two thumbs up from me(’:)’)

Have you guys seen the rotating picture on the Forum page of Bloody Cactus and Xena? I took that at Painter’s during their hike. It’s at the fire ring up the hill in the stand of tulip poplars. Killer spot.

Thanks for the info. I am looking forward to camping there on my way to Hot Springs.
