Parking at Hwy 19E

Two questions regarding parking in The Highlands of Roan:

  1. Being that I am not familiar with the area and although the trail map is detailed, I would still like to know if there is a forest road that leads up to Overmountain Shelter? According to the North Carolina Gazetteer and Atlas, it looks like Roaring Creek Rd.

  2. Is it safe to park at HWY 19e (Elk Park,NC)

Thanks for any information!!

Hello,

Some friends of mine and I did a hike over Roan this year, and parking was a problem. There is a B&B that is like .3 trail West of the parking spot at 19E. It is new…but the guy let us park there for a fee. I cannot remember the name. E-mail me if you want me to try to research that for you. elbudda1@yahoo.com

Now…about the road to Overmountain. When I hiked through there in 03…there were some guys out dayhiking and they gave a friend of mine a lift into town from that shelter. And it seems like they parked close buy. But I don’t know much about that road. I think there is parking less than half a mile.

Bob Peoples is the guy you want to talk to about all of this.

Happy Hiking…

Geoffrey Morris offers use of his property as a safer alternative to parking at the 19E crossing. There have been a significant number of vehicles vandalized at the trailhead lot over the years–mostly those left for more than a day.

Accomadations can be seen on our web site www.mountainharbour.net and click on the hikers cabin or in both hiking books. Parking is 5.00 a day or $2.00 a day with shuttle.
