Has anyone ever had any trouble parking at the trailheads overnight?

Yes. Drive the beater car. Leave nothing in it. Check with the Park Service about security at your entry point. Some places are so remote no one will mess with you. The Preserve across my street?..half an hour and your grub is gone. Happened last week. They got almost everything of my wife’s college friend. Stupid, but she parked the car fulled loaded for school at a remote dead end picnic area. Doh.:x

Safety of parking depends upon the trailhead. I believe that either end to enders guide or the guide book put out by the gmc made mention of which trailheads were particularly dangerous. I agree with Bushwhack though, leave the Audi at home. Items left visible inside your vehicle are an open invitation.

I work in an area where people park all the time to section hike… or for just a few nights out. People will smash your windows and go through all of your stuff and take anything that isn’t nailed down. This happened at least ten times where I work last summer. If you can’t park in a well populated area where someone is less likely to pick up a rock and smash your window in I HIGHLY suggest that you arrange a pick up drop off thing.
dont park overnight… trust me
Yes, you need to be careful here. I would suggest checking the contacts in the End-toEnder’s Guide (as stated above). There are many places that will allow you to park your car - safely, sometimes for a small fee. I have even seen cars broken into on the trailhead for Mt. Mansfield where the LT crosses Rt. 108 in Smuggler’s Notch. This is a well traveled road but still gets its share of vandalism.

Bummer:(
I did park overnight at Rt 11/30 and Rt 4 (across from The Long Trail Inn) with no problems. But I guess I might have just got lucky.
If I could just get a month off to hike it all at once I wouldn’t have to worry about parking. :oh
Thanks.

Hitching is pretty easy to and from trail heads. You can leave your car somewhere safe and hitch to the trail. I even got two offers of rides doing the long road walk when I didn’t want a ride. I even had a pretty easy time hitching back to Boston from North Adams when I finished.
When I did the New Hampshire AT and bounced my car around the trail, a hostel manager was happy to watch out for my car at no extra charge.
