Parking at Waterton

For LONG TERM PARKING AT WATERTON TH (like for a thru hike) Waterton authorities have begun to say “No.” The Waterton Canyon and Trailhead Parking closure begins August 2 and authorities are requesting that CT thru hikers get dropped off at Waterton TH and not plan to leave a car there. RTD-Denver.com can assist via bus #63E to Lockheed Martin. Your friends etc. might help. For MAP showing alternative to Waterton Canyon see the CTF website, www.ColoradoTrail.org

If you get dropped off at Waterton Canyon after August 2nd by a friend or the #63E bus, you are not going to be a happy hiker! The gates will be locked on both the parking lot and the entrance to the canyon, and you will not be able to enter either. I live right in this area, and you are at least 25 miles (estimate, but pretty close) from the CTF suggested alternative CT access point near Sedalia, and at least 7 miles from the absolute nearest access point, which is in a secure and restricted neighborhood, which also happens to be where I live. I will gladly discuss this with anyone who would like to dialogue on this very long closure. I am not happy at all with this, and it will make access much harder for CT Thrus. Not to worry for those of you starting before August 2nd this year, but 2011 is a done deal. As always, if you would like a shuttle to the trailhead, just email me, and if in town, I’ll more than gladly provide one for you. TrailGuy

Thanks TrailGuy, you’re right, after Aug. 2 Waterton will be closed. Before August 2, though, getting dropped at Waterton would work for CT users starting a SOBO trip.
