Passage 34 Update - Schultz Pass to Cedar Ranch

I ran into the American Conservation Experience (ACE) volunteers doing trail work in this section last week. At the pace they are working, they should have the section between Bismark Lake and FR 418 completed in no time at all. I stopped and helped them for a couple of hours. A great bunch of folks doing some outstanding trail work on the AZT.

Also, this long passage is very hard to find water, if any at all. Kelly tank was dry, along with the other tanks, and there is no more water stashed at the Cedar Ranch trailhead at the end of the passage. Since the next passage can be very dry also, I would recommend water planning or stashes between water sources, in which I didn’t of course, and, subsequently ran short on water.

AZT held a work event at Forest Road 418 last month, and we built .64 miles, south towards the crew coming down the mountain. There are more events on the scedule, last full weekend of the summer months, posted on the AZT website.

This is one awesome chuck of trail thru some incredible country!

I stashed ten 1 gallon water jugs just east of the AZT sign at Cedar Ranch trail head for AZT hikers and hauled off the old jugs. Even though there may be water at the livestock tank at Cedar Ranch, I think its on private land. The stash may help hikers minimize the use of the tank and help the ranchers out.

Shawn, the AZT group did a great job on the trail construction, it was well noted as I hiked through. The ACE crew mentioned it also. The country IS quite spectacular through this section. Thanks.
