Patagonia Capilene?

Hi… I’m preparing for a PCT thru-hike, northbound in 2011. I was planning on using Patagonia Capilene as my top and bottom base layer but I’m not sure what weight to use. Has anyone used capilene for a thru-hike? What weight works the best (1,2,3 or expedition)? I was planning on using the base layer with a down jacket through the High-Sierras and just a rain shell and t-shirt for OR/WA. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

I would recommend the light stuff, but am an East coast guy.

As a general rule, invest in an 800 count down bag and vest/or jacket, fleece hat, fleece gloves/mitts, wind gear in the south and possible switch to rain gear in north and for the rest use as many light weight layers as necessary. Usually only one.

Travell light and sleep sound.

Have a great trip

This year on the PCT I took cap 2 bottoms and a smartwool top, along with a pair of silk long johns, which weigh next-to-nothing. I liked the flexiblity of one or both at night or on the trail. In the Sierra, I wore everything I had to stay warm.

I agree with Mango that silk makes a nice supplement to your long johns. I carried med. weight long john and silk long johns , a fleece sweater, a down sweater and a fleece cap. A little bit of overkill but I hate being cold. What I didnt wear , I stuck under my sleeping pad or used for a pillow.
