PCT books- planning and hiking

I just finished a southbound hike of the AT and am hoping to start the PCT in May. I was hoping to get some recommendations from former thru-hikers of what books they used to plan, and what books they used on trail as guides/data books.
I have seen Yogi’s PCT handbook- it seems that this could be used for both, but I was hoping to hear some thoughts from people who have done it. Thanks.

Get the three guidebooks: S. Cal, N. Cal, and OR-WA. The Guidebooks have trail descriptions plus maps for the whole trail (and alternates)

Also get the PCT Data Book. This is the most-used PCT book. An excellent resource.

The PCT is different from the AT. On the AT, maps aren’t necessary. The PCT is not marked like the AT. The PCT Guidebooks and Data Book are essential items for staying found.

The data book is also really helpful for seeing at a glance where water is scarce. On the PCT, knowing where it is 25 miles to the next water source is essential. That information is in the text of the guidebook, but it is much easier to see in the data book. Both are necessary.

thanks a lot- yogi, i had a chance to flip through your handbook at Bob Peebles (spelled incorrectly?) at Kincora- great place and even better people. I intend to order the handbook as well as the guides and data book. Staying found is a pretty important thing.

I recommend Yogi’s book as the “hikers” guide for the trail. Remember the “official” books must also provide for horse users. Consequently, they don’t tell you some of the best places to go, because horses would cause too much damage.

Yogi’s info cuts through the careful wording and delivers a voice in the ear of the hiker -not just from her, but from many other hikers who have been there, done that, and have something to tell you about it.

I think getting all three is the way to go.

Just wanted to say that I got Yogi’s handbook yesterday, and I thought it was great. Read the whole thing & was too worked up to sleep. Did the AT in '02, and it’s definitely time to plan the PCT. Yogi’s book was exactly what I was looking for, and more. Good info, well thought-out. Good on you, Yogi.
