PCT Hammock / Tent

I’m currently stationed in Iraq. When I’m done my time here I’m planning on taking a week and hiking from Campo to Idyllwild. Obviously I can’t go out and pre-scout this area. I was only in S. Cali 4 months prior to this deployment. My question is: Will I be able to use my Hennessy Hammock on this section of the trail, or is a tent more practicable. I’m not out to buy another piece of gear. It’s one or the other. I prefer the hammock, it packs lighter and I sleep better. I don’t know if there are ample places to tie this up on the southern portion of this trail. Thanks in advance for any advice on this, or other info on this section of the trail.

I have not hiked any of the PCT but I do own a hammock. Why don’t you just use the tarp that covers the hammock as your main shelter. Use your hiking poles to set it up and bring a couple tent stakes. Not sure how it would fair in a hard rain storm, but from what I understand the weather is generally pretty good down there with little rain.

Anyone have experience using just the tarp from the Hennessey as primary shelter? I’d like to use it (since I’ve got it) instead of buying a tarp tent

Interesting concept…I’ll have to set my tarp up in the back yard, when I get home, and see how that fares. Thanks for the idea. Don’t know why I didn’t think of that!

I hiked the trail this past year and you will be much better off with a tarp of some sort. You are correct, there are some places where you couldn’t hang a hammock if you tried. Also, it gets cold in the desert at night (and windy at times) obviously depending on what time of year you are there. Most people were able to sleep under the stars for the most part.

A-Train, the tarp for the hennesy hammock is not large enough to use as a primary shelter at ground leval. Nimble tried using his for the first part of his thru in 03 and bailed on the idea before we made it out of GA. He switched to a Dancing Light Gear tarp untill it warmed up enough for the hammock. I used my ultralight asym from glasgow va to the big k and loved it. But, I don’t reccomend using the tarp as a shelter on the ground.
