PCT in "Into the Wild"

I just saw the movie “into the wild” and left with mixed feelings. Overall I thought it was a very good movie in that it presented the youthful idealism of the protagonist in a sometimes unflattering light, thus avoiding the usual over-simplified stories you get out of hollywood.

I’m not sure what section of the trail was used for the filming. Maybe someone else has an idea but the credits list several areas where filming took place.

I was also wondering if the protagonist actually hiked the whole trail in real life.

No he hiked north from Tahoe and got bored after a week and quit, according to the book. Bad section to do any way overused tons of bikes and stuff, though the free 40 of Malt Liqour at Hwy 40’s Donner ski Ranch for thru hikers was a big goal since Mt. Laguna 40 miles from Mexico when I heard about it.

Lion King,
Some hikers found the hostel it’s about a block West of the Ski Ranch. I guess the Donner Ranch lets people usually use thier employee housing unit, but there was one employee there so we couldn’t. They did let us shower though. I passed but Hydro took advantage of it. The boss man said I got the last 40 ever, :bawling which is sad, and may be bad bussiness, since hearing about the 40 was the only reason we went down there. We ended up going there three times, so I think that 40 paid for itself. Great place fun locals, and that Margarita thing coming out of the wall was “EPIC”. First time in my life I fell face first into a street and needed help getting up too!!!

…imho. Such a great book and when I saw it a few days ago I was just overwhelmed with the basic mediocrity of the film.
Vedder’s musical contributions are quite good but, though he is a great actor, Penn doesn’t have much of an ear for dialogue (he wrote the screenplay) and he ODs on the slo-mo shots as though he’s auditioning to shoot a corporate commercial. One quick additional not about the PCT element of the story…just before they show a shot of Tahoe the main charcter is shown next to a campfire when a wooden sign is being engulfed. If you look closely you can a PCT logo on it.
