PCT snow musings

First, I’d like to apologize to the AT hikers who have to put up with endless snow speculations by prospective PCT thru-hikers. BUT CAN’T… STOP… SELF…

Anyway, snow levels in the Sierras are now quite high– maybe 140% normal. Worse, there seems to be another large storm coming which will bring “up to 30 inches” of additional snow tonight and tomorrow.

Yeah, yeah, people whine about Sierra snow every year, but this increasingly looks like a challenging NOBO year. (See the bottom chart and mentally add another big uptick.) Not the worst ever, but definitely rough.

If you hiked the PCT a couple years ago and you’re thinking “Whatta buncha pansies!” about this year’s crop of pathetic whiners, you might want to check out this graph. This compares snow levels at Upper Tyndall Creek for some recent years and the worst recent year (1998). (I selected Upper Tyndall Creek because it is close to Forester Pass.)

On the other hand, the San Jacintos are still snowy, but melting out nicely. 55 degrees at 9:40 AM… woohoo!

I contacted the PCTA about flipping to SOBO and was told that if you want to reverse direction, you need a new permit, which they’d be happy to provide.

I hope all these links work…
