Peak bagging - John Muir Trail

I’m planning a JMT thru-hike in August and I’m leaving myself plenty of time for side-trips, zero days, peak bagging, basically whatever I feel like doing. How do people decide what to do with their gear when they want to make a quick summit push? My concern is having critters chew up my tent/sleeping bag/gear. I would appreciate any advice. Also feel free to share ideas on best side-trips. Thanks.

I assume you’ll have a bear can, so you can keep your food in there. I know it’s possible that other gear can get chewed on, but that hasn’t happened to me. We just left out stuff stashed behind a bush.

Rainbow Falls is a nice side trail from Red’s Meadow.

Split Peak is a good short climb just south of Mather Pass. It’s nothing amazing, but it’s a 14er that happens to be a pain in the ass to climb from the normal, east route. From the JMT, it’s much easier. Assuming it’s clear, you’ll get some good views of Whitney from up there.

Sean G I will be out there in August with a group of 4 other old farts. If you see us chugging up the trail stop and say hi. Have a great hike and hope to see you out there!!
