Pegleg - Andover Guest House

I just read a posting by attroll on Whiteblaze.net that said Pagleg, the manager of the Andover Guest House recently passed away.

I stayed at the Andover Guest House in 2003, and for me it was the best of the “commercial hostels” that I experienced along the AT.

I was hiking with Blaze at the time and we had had a fairly tough few days before getting to East B Hill Road. We hit East B Hill Road mid morning with the intention of hitching a ride into Andover for a well earned break.

It was stinking hot and after about 45 minutes only a handfull of cars had passed and the drivers didn’t want to see us. And then along came Pegleg (Richard) in his van on what we found out was a daily shuttle run to pick up hikers. Without any strings he offered us an ice cold Coke and a lift into town. What a life-saver he was to us!

As it turned out I liked the Andover Hotel so much I stayed there for 3 nights, getting Pegleg to shuttle me out to the trail each day.

The thing I liked about the place was that it was so clean and comfortable, lots of room to lounge about and nothing was too much trouble for Sandra and Pegleg.
My condolences go to Sandra and Richard’s family.

One of my favourite AT hike photos is one of Pegleg with me with Lake Mooselookmeguntic in the background when he dropped me off at the trail (the photo can be seen on my website at the link below

http://www.geocities.com/davidburville/roll7a.html )

Pegleg was such a good hearted soul at the time he dropped me off at the tril to continue my hike Restless just happened to climb out of the scrub to cross the road, and without a second thought Pegleg handed her an ice cold Coke.

Pegleg will be sorely missed by the AT hiking community. I do hope they can manage to keep the Andover Hotel open.

Man, I was just there! Not three weeks ago I hiked from Grafton Notch to Stratton. I stayed at the Guest House and was amazed that it was so . . . awesome!

I am bummed, but also greatful to have met such a great, unselfish guy (and gal) and will keep my brief memory forever.

I also just heard this news in the past few days. Strangely enough I was in Andover the afternoon of 6/28 for the first time since my hike but didn’t go over to say hi to them (I took a zero last Sept when I went through), now I wished I had. Someone told me that folks are helping her run shuttles right now. Their season is just starting to kick in too.

Pegleg was a true friend to hikers. It is a great loss to us all. Remember there are other Trail Legends up there in Maine (Sandra, the Shaws, the Pie Lady). If you can, stop in and see them, stay awhile. They are truly gifts from divine providence.

I stayed w/ Pegleg last year. He was a generous man. He will be missed. My condolences to his family.

I’ve heard from attroll that Pegleg died on June 30. If I recall rightly he was on medication when I was in Andover with him. If anyone finds out the cause of his death it would be appreciated if you could let me know.

I’m so sorry to hear that Pegleg passed away. Him and the guest house, hostel, he and his wife ran are a credit to the AT community.
I stayed with him on my “01” thru. By far it was the cleanest and well run hostel on the AT that I stayed in.
He will be missed by all the friends that he made.
God bless him.

When I decided to hike the A.T. last year ('02), I knew it would be an incredible experience! That experience is becoming all the more indearing when remembering meeting individuals such as Pete Farley (who I hiked with throughout Maine- passing away on Mt. Washington)and Peg Leg… He and his wife were wonderful host to me- I stayed and took two “zero” days to stay with them. I also hold Pie Lady and Mrs. Shaw close to my heart and hope to see them again- until then, I am made the richer having to meet those whom have passed on!
