Permit confusion!

Do I need a permit to hike from Walker Pass to Sonora Pass? I’ve heard several different answers from forestry folk. (less than 500 miles = no, campfire permit = yes, need permit from starting location). Anyone know for sure?

I researched this a year or two ago. If you’re hiking less than 500 miles, you’re not eligible for the “one permit does it all” from the PCTA. You will need permits for backcountry camping in the each of the national parks you’re going to cross (a permit from each park), and to climb Mt. Whitney if you plan to do so. You’ll have to contact each national forest separately to find out which require permits. I have been told that the national parks have expressed concern about misuse of the PCTA permit by short distance hikers, so “cheating” is probably not a good idea lest all PCT hikers be forced to get separate permits.

Permits are granted by the managing agency. Thru hiking the PCT is simple, one permit covers the trail or if section hiking then a permit is obtained from the managing agency overseeing the section you plan to hike. It is as simple as using a telephone or fax or signing in at a kiosk on the trail. In Yosemite NP, access will vary based on which trailhead you plan to use or where you wish to hike. A telephone to the ranger station near the trail head you plan to use will set you up and all your questions will be answered. An end to end hike is a lot simpler.
