Permit pickup if starting at Walker Pass?

Hey guys. Some buddies and I are trying to section hike from Walker Pass to Tahoe. I know we need a wilderness permit for Golden Trout Wilderness, but the ranger I spoke to said we would need to pick up our permit from either Lone Pine or Bishop. This seems really inconvenient, are we supposed to hike to say Olancha Pass Trail and hitchhike to Lone Pine from Olancha? Thanks in advance for your insight!

They require a back-country wilderness too. Have you thought about getting a “thru-hiker permit” from the PCT Association? It’s good for the entire trail. I don’t imagine anybody will notice whether you’re section- or thru-hiking.

I didn’t even think about getting a thru-hiker permit!! That would have been so much easier. Unfortunately I’m a big procrastinator and don’t have the 2-3 week wait time to order one. And the ranger told me the wilderness permit I’m getting would be good for my entire trip through Tahoe. I have to get a back country wilderness one, too? I’ll be sure to ask them about that, thanks.
