Permits and other bureaucracy

Hi all,
Just a quick question – I’ve seen a lot of posts about permits for whitney, fires, canada etc. Is there a ceiling on numbers or is there a particular need to nail these months in advance? I’ll learn all about this when my trail books arrive (thanks whuppin’ stick) but I’m wondering if it’s necessary to go to the effort from here (the almost-
bureaucracy-free trampers’ republic of New Zealand) or just to sort it out when I arrive. A heads-up from experienced (read: footsore) pcters would be very welcome.

The PCTA has info on permits:

http://www.pcta.org/planning/before_trip/permits.asp

I wasn’t aware that a fire permit is necessary, but it doesn’t sound too difficult to obtain.

There’s more information on Whitney permits here:

http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation/wild/mtwhitney.shtml

I found the permit process to be quite confusing, so I climbed Whitney on my thru-hike without one. I was told that the rangers there focus on hikers coming from Whitney Portal, which is not the route that PCT hikers would take to reach the summit.

For your camp stove, (so the ranger at the kickoff said). He was handing them out there.
