Permits, camp sites and questions!

I am planning a thru hike of the John Muir pass this august–possibly connecting with the High Sierra Trail if I have enough time to complete the two hikes.

Coming from Canada, female, solo and carless–without a permit and all of the camp sites in Yosemite Valley are booked. This should be interesting…

I plan to take an early YARS bus to claim a camp site at CAMP 4 (for backpackers) and then the following day --venture on another early morning rise to wait out a permit for the following day! Yikes~!

If you have any suggestions that could make this process smoother please let me know. And don’t say “plan 6 months in advance”

If you are arriving on the mid-morning YARTS bus, try going to the permit office first. I have done this a couple of times as a solo hiker (midweek) and had the choice of a same day or next day permit.

If you get a same day permit the campsite issue doesn’t matter. If you get a next day permit you can stay at the backpackers campground which will always have spaces at that time of day and will be quieter than camp 4.

be first in line. i slept outside the permit office (got the late YARTS bus that got in at night), and was first. apparently, this is frowned upon by rangers, but no one bother us (there were 3 others on that same bus who also camped out). others who were at the campground starting arriving around 5 or 6am.
