Permits - John Muir Trail

My friend and I are planning a southbound thru-hike of the JMT starting august 16th-ish from yosemite valley. We missed the pre-registration for permits, but we’re planning on showing up and getting onsite permits for either the day we arrive or the next day.

here’s my question: is this permit the only one we’ll need for the length of the trail? and are we expected to ask for a stamp for the whitney zone at this point?

thanks!

Yes, one permit. They should put on there the Whitney stuff, but it doesn’t hurt to make sure they do.

Early afternoon is a good time to show up, since reserved permits that didn’t get picked up will be released then. Either that or show up a little while before they open up in the morning.

I wanted to leave 1 day earlier than my JMT permit I made online.

When I talked to the ranger when I picked up my JMT permit last year, he said that there is really no problem issuing JMT permits without a reservation.

Wow! Really? I said.
Yeah, I issue JMT permits all day and many don’t bother cancelling JMT reservations so they are always available. Ranger.

I would suggest that you call the ranger station in advance to verify what I’m saying.
