Perorneal Tendon Tear

I've been diagnosed with a peroneal tendon tear in my right ankle and will have surgery on 12/20 to repair it. Six weeks in a cast and another six in a boot and rehab is a sobering recovery to face, but without the surgery, I can't hike...and I don't want anything to stand in the way of my planned 2013 second thru-hike.

If anyone can shed some light on hiking after peroneal tendon tear surgery, I’d appreciate hearing about it. The surgeon says I’ll be hiking by summer. I sure hope so.

Thanks in advance!~J.

Journey, sorry to hear of your injury. I've no experience with a tear as you've experienced. My own rotator cuff injury several years ago was bad enough. The rehab was awful and I wondered if the day would ever come when I could re-shoulder my pack. But that day finally did come and I'm so thankful I was able to persevere with the pain and get back to hiking. I'll pray for the same for you.

I, too, am looking to thru-hike in 2013, so perhaps we’ll meet each other. I hope that you’ll get a 2013 journal up and running soon. Anyway, all the best with the surgery next week and the recovery and rehab.

Another thought -- I found that the all the stretching (which was the most painful part of the rehab) was most critical to work strength and flexibility back into to my shoulder. I imagine it will be the same with your ankle. It is amazing how quickly things tighten up and shorten. Anyway, hang in there! It will be a slow process but you'll make it.

journey, with a broken wrist and three surguries over 20+years I've learned one thing, tendons take time to heal often alot of time so go slow at first. We hear this time and time again,to much to soon. And for good reason....it's true.No one thing will kick you out of the game quicker,so go slow you'll get there...slow and steady wins the race.good luck
