Picture phone - Appalachian Trail

Has anyone tried using one of the new picture phones to take pics and e-mail them home from the trail? Might make a good 2 in 1 device. Any thoughts?

I did not try a picture phone, did not carry a phone at all on my hike. I did take a zillion photos but with a 35mm camera.

Last I heard, the picture phones take very low resolution pictures- not something you could make prints off of. Also, to email them I believe that you need to pay for special web service and you probably would only be able to get coverage for that in town if at all. If you mean just take the pix, store them & email from town, I don’t know if you can upload at most libraries.

I may be wrong tho. I do know a lot of people are now taking digital cameras on their hikes, bouncing the charger, and sending the memory sticks home for someone to upload. Windtalker from this year did that.

We just came back from a week on the AT around Kent and I took my digital camera. Worked great. FOr once I don’t have to throw out half the pics, I can just look at them and redux. I can send some to yous guys that wants to see them.

Okay. Speaking of other digital storage meadia; my brother inlaw has a watch camera…yeah, a watch camera. Take real crappy but fun black and white pics. Great for trade shows when you can’t readily photograph. Dick Tracy ain’t got nuthing on this. I think one of those new digital vidio camera would be cool to take on a hike. Nikon has one that’s about as big as your wallet. Live fed to hime from the trail would be a blast so the folks can really jump right in. Smell-e-vision? Scartch n’ sniff tv? I carried a cam corder all the way up Katahdin, it got some great umphs climbing one handed. I tried to get my frined Jenny to be our vidiographer for our hike to make a short movie but she doesn’t hike.
