Place to keep a bike?

I live near Boston, I don’t have a car and I like biking, I also like hiking and I’ve been very bored this summer. I had thought I cuoldn’t hike because I don’t have a car, but it just occured to me that I could bike to the long trail, and hike it.

I’m wondering though, what should I do with my bike when I get to the start of the Long Trail, and how would I get from one end of the Long Trail, to my bike?

I live near the southern trail head. I’d be more than willing to store your bike and take you to the Trail Head. As for getting back, you could hitch to a bus line and I’d pick you up in Bennington or North Adams.

If Blue Jay could deliver your bike to N Woodstock NH I could deliver it to the Northern Terminus (90 minutes away) and you could bike VT 100 south through Vermont on your way home. That would be cool.

Would you use a bike trailer to haul your pack and gear?

I have “bike spotted” along the LT for sections in the past-driven my bike to one section, locked it up in the woods, driven back to my starting point, hiked to the bike, and then biked back to my car. If you find a ride or take a bus to the opposite end from where you are leaving your bike and start there, you won’t have to worry about getting back to the bike. It’s usually a long way around, but if you’ve got the time…

This idea just popped into my head randomly at 4 AM a day or two ago, so I’m still running it over in my head and thinking if I’m going to do it. Thank you Blue Jay and Celt for the help you are offering, I’ll decide if I’m going in the next few days and get in touch with you if I am. Thanks very much. (Celt, your idea sounds good to me. I would of course be willing to compensate both of you for time and gas). I don’t know what a bike trailer is, I figured I’d just wear my pack while I bike.

A few questions I have about the Long Trail, where does it start (or Blue Jay, where do you live)? I hope I can find decent roads to bike along to get there, when I put in North Adams as my destination on mapquest (again, I don’t really know where the Long Trail starts but from maps it looks like near North Adams) it says I’d take route 2, I haev to find an okay way to bike. And, how far off the trail, and how often are there places to resupply? Is there a web page that tells about this?

It does start at North Adams, on Route 2. There is a book that specifies the towns along the trail for resupply. I think you can get it from the ATC web site.

I’ll pick you up anywhere in Western Mass. Take you to the trail head and safely keep your bike (I bike also). Just get close to North Adams on your way back and I’ll come and get you. I will most likely be working then so you may have to wait a few hours but I’ll be as quick as I can. I get alot of Trail Majic, you get alot more when you give it.
It’s great your winging it like this, spur of the moment is, in my opinion, the best way to hike.

Hey, this trip won’t work out for me. Thanks again for the offered help though, I really appreciate it. Maybe next year. =)
