We are hiking a short section of the JMT from LYV to Reds Meadow, starting on August 26th. Is there anywhere in Yosemite or Mammoth Lakes that we can leave a car for the week? Also is there a bus that runs from Mammoth to Yosemite or Yosemite to Mammoth daily? I think the YARTS bus does but their schedule isn’t up yet. Thanks.

When he hiked for a few days last summer in Yosemite, I think the rangers at the permit station gave us a tag to put in the windshield of the car stating the dates of the hike. We then got to park in a parking lot just past Curry village for the duration of the hike. I don’t know if there is a time limit for how long you can leave a car, but you might try calling the backcountry office. I don’t know about the bus thing…we stayed in the park and did a big loop back to the car. Best wishes. It is a beautiful area. Wish I was going back with you!

Thanks, I just looked yesterday afternoon and YARTS has their summer schedule up now. They run a bus from Mammoth Mtn Inn to the Yosemite Visitor Center at 7am. I think we are going to try to park at or near MMI and ride the bus to Yosemite then hike back to Reds Meadow, catch the bus to MMI and our car.
We are flying into Reno and driving down to Mammoth. I need to find out how long Yosemite will hold our permit on the day we are supposed to start our hike. If we catch the bus from MMI we may not make it to Yosemite until 11am. Its not a big deal getting a late start because our permit requires us to stay at Little Yosemite Valley.

I just got some permits for Yosemite. They release them at 10:00 am (release = let other people have your beloved permits) unless you call them. If you let them know, they’ll keep your permits 'till 5:00 pm, closing time.
