Does anyone know if there is a safe (its a 96 so I’m not too worried about theft) place to park near North Adams MA? I’m planning on a section hike from North Adams MA to Great Barrington. No jokes or virulent mean spiritedness please (Jack  ) Happy trails and best of times to the class of “07”

I parked at the community center/bar/private club down the road. I forget the name of it but its maybe .2 miles east of the Rt 2 crossing, by pedestrian bridge. They have a big lot and have a hiker specific place. Just “register” with them before you start. It was safe, nice people, I left it this summer.

Thanks for the beta man. Hopefully we’ll run into each other out west this season. Drop me an email some time. :cheers

As a section hiker myself, I’m always on the lookout for good parking tips. The best I’ve found as a general reference is the Appalachian Trail Parking site run by Cyndi and David Rohland (two wonderful people from right here in my own PA.) Here is their listing for North Adams:

“There is no overnight parking at the trailhead but overnight parking may be available 100 yards east of the AT on MA2 at the Greylock Community Club. Make sure you inquire first. There are several major stores within a short walk of the AT in either direction from the AT crossing.”

That sounds an awful lot like the place A-Train was talking about. If it is, think about sending the Rohlands an update.

They have a host of good parking tips, excellent trail (and parking area and campsite) photos on the site too. It’s well laid out and really goes in depth with info where they have it. They are expanding the site as fast as possible with submissions from hikers, so if you have data to share, please do so (especially for New England and the lower South.) The URL is:
