Places to pick up food

We are looking for some advice from anyone who has already thru-hiked the CT. Where are the best, most convenient places to pick up food along the CT during a thru hike? We want to mail food to be held for pick-up as we do the trail. It would also be nice to ocassionally supplement our food supply with items from a store. We are looking for the reprovisioning sites that are easiest to reach from the trail. Also we want to step off the trail a couple of times to do laundry, shower and eat out. Where are the best locations for doing that as well? Thanks for your advice.

Check out Mags’ end-to-end guide for a thorough overview of re-supplying on the CT. It’ll tell you all you want to know! www.pmags.com

On my thru, Breckenridge (mile 105) and Silverton (mile 410) were easily accessed and had everything a hiker could want. Buena Vista (mile 190) and Creede (mile 340) also had complete hiker accomodations but were much tougher to get to (long walks into town / reasonably-priced shuttles out of town).

Don’t forget Leadville. It was an easy hitch, had a great hostel, great restaurants and outfitters. Mags End to End guide is a must. Buena Vista was accessed by a nasty road and I thought the town was a little pricey but had everything you would need.

The answer is highly personal. It’ll depend on who fast you hike, how much food you want to carry and whether there are any of the towns that you want to visit or not.

I would hit Salida at the 1/2 way (ish) point. Great town to visit; lots of hotels, excellent restaurants, and outfitters for all needs. Good recharge point. Not too bad of a hitch from HWY 50-- lots of traffic going over Monarch Pass.
