Any advice on where to stay for one or two nights while I am in Harpers Ferry? Unfortunately, I won’t have any hiking gear with me but want to see the area while I am in DC. Thanks!

Probably the best place to stay that is reasonable is the the Hilltop House. The views of the area from the grounds are wonderful and it’s right out of “downtown” Harpers Ferry.

I have to second the Hilltop House. The hiker rooms don’t have tv, but they are clean and comfortable. (not sure if other more expensive rooms have tvs? I really enjoyed my stay there last year.
red hat
They place us hikers RIGHT over the kitchen, (noise all night long) they denied me my TV “fix” they were abrupt to some of us hikers ( We were trashed by the recent wet weather) we could not check in until 3pm (that affected my whole plan of cleaning, laundry, postal, and resupply in one day). I wished I stayed at the campground. I suggest staying at one of the Hostels nearby. The heck with those snobs…I was not impressed by their management skills.

They do have tv is the hiker rooms now. There is only one hostel close by in Knoxville Maryland, but you can’t check in until 6 so 3 isn’t so bad. 1/4, why didn’t you set your stuff down there or at the outfitter, do you’re in town stuff and then laundry that night? Adapt and over come
Don’t mean to pick on you, but maybe that’ll help Keith. Oh and the KOA is $33 a night for a tent site and both franchise motels are at $85 a night.

I thought they treated us ok when we were there. I’m very grateful that they at least try to accomodate hikers given that most of their customers don’t strike me as hiker types.
Also, if you pay their regular rate then I’m sure that they would give you a better room. Beggars cant be choosers.

Ive stayed at both the Hilltop and the HI Hostel across the river in Sandy Hook. I like both. If you want to stay real cheap, the hostel is $15/night, the last time I was there and the hosts were very gracious. One can use the kitchen and common room and I think its a comfortable relaxing place to stay. The Hilltop is graciously old but quaint, the view is spectacular, and worth the room price.
Buckeye
I did not realise that the KOA was so much and I thought the other hotel? super 8? was just a few dollars more…
I guess in retrospect I was spoiled by the southern Trail affordability unlike the northern part of the trail. OK It was quaint but sometimes we get to a place cranky. I did absolutly love the small outfitters the owner was just wonderful and I will see her again!

Dear Dust,
SHUT UP …
if I want to watch TV it should be my pleasure to watch TV!~ If I want to eat a galllon of Ice cream I should be my Pleasure to eat a gallon of Ice cream! It is my freakin hike !! go take a long hike off a short cliff !If you want to call me names you had better watch out I am greatly offended to be called a mush brain even if its true it is a degrading remark and I am offended! You ever heard of dignity and respect??If you want to live in a commune and hope that someone brings you food and health care, fine. I can respect that !I like the freedom of the United States and I am always in wonder of Nature and Gods creation, I am sadden by all the disrespectful people that walk this earth, remember 600 million people will be living here in the United States (2006) you had better have some respect for your fellow man or Karma will kick you in your spineless nuts!
