Planning for 2013/2014 hike

I'm active duty preparing to go on my third deployment in June. I've been dreaming of doing the A.T. since i learned of it when I enlisted 4 years ago. I'm an avid hiker, I have family in the Shenandoah and Smokey mountain areas and I'm quite fond of the trails out there.

I’ve read several books/trail journals/articles recently and I’m still quite intrigued with whatever documents I can get my hands on. I’ve got all the financial aspects covered completely, I’m in great shape (and I’m not obtuse to carrying a pack), and im finally expecting to get out (early) in 2013 or (on time) in 2014. I’m planning on hitting the trail the minute I get my dd214 in hand.

I’m looking for as much information as possible from people who’ve done it, and any advice they can steer me towards.

etfig, you sound like you have Springer Mt. fever. You are doing the right thing by researching the trail. I did a thru-hike in 2011. A magical journey that took 4 1/2 mos. to travel 2181 miles that started at the approach trail to Springer Mt. in Ga. Thank you for your service. Happy Trails!:)
