Planning - Have Questions

I’m planning this year’s section hike starting at Daleville Va (NOBO) and it will take me into Shenandoah NP for a few days, getting to Rockfish Gap around May 19. I’m looking at Wingfoot’s guidebook (2005 right now) and I have some questions. Can I camp along the trail so I can do whatever miles I want to each day? Is water pretty reliable in May? Is the terrain in the park tough, easy, moderate? Are concessions stands open before Memorial Day at all? Can I get a hitch back to Daleville from inside the park, probably somewhere along Skyline Drive? Any info appreciated.

You can camp near the trail in SNP, but you have to fill out a backcountry permit when you enter the park llsting where you plan to camp. Water is plentiful. Terrain is easy to moderate. Concessions opened around May 1st last year, I believe, but call the park first to verify (will probably open early this year due to warm spring). Don’t know about hitching inside the park, never tried it.

They discourage hitching in the park. A ranger told us it was forbidden and we could be fined. We did it anyway at the pull offs. You can hitch back to Waynesboro. Check in your guidebook for an outfitter and call them about a shuttle back to Daleville.

The blackberry milkshakes were awesome in the Park. I can’t remember where it was we got them. You take a blue blaze to the right, it is in the middle of the park where the field is located across the road. We hit that place with about 7 or eight in our group and we cleaned them out.

The trail in SNP is well kept. Good trail. We did the 108 miles in 4.5 days but we had thunder storms almost everyday so we didn’t take any noon day naps.

You’ve got some interesting climbs before you get to SNP. Apple Orchard Mt, Bluff Mt, and Priest Mt, just to name a few. Some of these are around 2,000 to 3,000 ft. climbs.

Buena Vista is a tough hitch into town. The trail comes out on top of the Gap and the cars are coming up over the rise and they have very little time to see you and stop. We have a lady and her daughter go down the road and turn around and come back for us. We had to wait for about 30 minutes to get a ride. Another hiker walk several miles before he got a ride.

Hope this helps.
