Anthony,
you wont have to worry about staying at the birches. Assuming you are thru-hiking, or at least starting from Monson all you need to do is put your name on the list when you enter Baxter (a mile past abol bridge). That reserves your spot. In fact I slept there 3 nights ago before I finished my thru-hike.
as far as your family, they either need to call the park to make a reservation at katahdin stream campground (1/4 miles from the birches) or they can stay in Millinocket (lots of motels) and drive into the park that morning to meet you. You shouldnt have any problems.
The birches is 8 dollars. Register at the ranger station when you get there. you can leave spare gear on the porch and get a day pack. the birches is real nice, spanking new, and IMO has the BEST privy on the AT.
peace and good luck,

A-Train’s right, Anthony, don’t worry to much about it. When you hit Caratunk you’ll have a very good idea about when you’ll reach Katahdin. Let your family know, they can call Baxter Park about reservation availabilty, and probably get a place to stay at Katahdin Stream Campground by stopping by HQ before going to the Park. If you plan a weekday finish, they’ll get a camping spot without any trouble. Katahdin’s a long way from Springer, so don’t worry about it too much now.
