Pocketmail? - Appalachian Trail

I recently purchased a Pocketmail to take along on my thru-hike. Tonight at work I tried to learn to use it in my mostly non-existant downtime, and I was not happy to learn that it turns itself off after 3 minutes of inactivity, and if there is a way to get back into the email I was composing, I couldn’t find it, and I had the instruction book right in front of me. Please tell me that there is a simple way to retrieve the email and finish it, because if there isn’t, I just wasted $250, because there is no way I use the thing without it shutting down at least once, and if I lose everything each time it does that, it will just be unwanted weight on the Trail. I am SO bad with technology…

Hey, Pocketmail works great for me on the trail. When your Pocketmail turns off in the middle of an email that you’re composing, just turn it back on and go to the outbox. Your email will be there. Click on the menu bar and click edit and you can continue with your email.
Good luck!!

Yah, the first time I used pocketmail it gave me a headache. But the learning curve is suprisingly short once you start journaling. It’s just like anything on the Trail, the trail teaches you what to do. I learn better by immediacy, not by cramming a rushed time period. Sounds like that plan might work for you too.

Remember, many people thruhiking will have a pocketmail (like Stumpetmail), and most will be willing to share tips. This is how I learned to operate my brand new digital camera. I carried the instruction book the whole first month, and I learned more in a day just by hiking a few hours with a photojournalist.

$250 for a Pocketmail ? They are on Ebay from $25-50, I just sold mine here for slightly less. Loved it when using it, Stumpknocker’s directions are right, and Jan’s commentary is right on too.

A large gallon sized Ziploc sealed, with the excess wrapped around and help with a rubber band protects it well, never once had water or condensation problems with mine.

Granny Fanny,

I could not have done my journal without one! They are great. Take the time to play with it and learn it. Any questions drop me a line. Don’t worry about the cost. I ran into several people that got theirs on Ebay and found they weren’t the latest model or they didn’t hold up … Be happy with what you have :0

One other thing you may consider is carrying your PM in a hard plastic case. I used a small travel case you carry handiwipes in for extra protections of the PM. I put the PM in a Ziploc bag and then put that in the small handiwipe case. I don’t remember what brand it was. You will have to check I tried one from my daughter that she left here for the grandkids and it was a little too small. The brand Wal-Mart carried was slightly larger and it fit fine. I also could not have done my journal without one. They are great and I plan on using it for the PCT next year.

Thanks everyone for your input. Probably my problem is that the instructions are written in Australian :lol . Hope to see some of you out on the trail this summer, though since Stumpknocker is leaving tomorrow, he will be hundreds of miles north by the time I start week after next! Cuppa, hope to meet you in the Shennies. Picked up a new copy of “The Hobbit” at the bookstore today to put in my Waynesboro maildrop. Jan, hope to see you out there someplace too.

BTW, the $250 was for both the device itself and a year of service, so I’m satisfied that when I learn to use it that it will be money well spent!
