Just wondering if anyone can recommend a cell phone that works will with the pocket mail device. Preferably pay as you go, but curious about any I suppose.
Thanks

As far as I know the pocketmail only works with standard phones and pay phones, not cell phones as they don’t fit the receiver. I ditched my pocketmail for an AT&T Tilt smartphone. It weighs less than my pocketmail and I can use it for a camera and cell phone too! Now I carry one item instead of three…

I used my pocketmail composer with a Sprint cell phone in '04 but had to put it in analog mode for it to work. But it did work.

Pros/cons of using a blackberry or trio or something like that instead of Pocketmail? Has anyone used a Blackbery on a thru-hike to send journal entries etc?

I used a Crackberry in '06 after our Pocketmail (we had another, more colorful name for it) crapped out for the last time while we were in the Sierra. We used the Crackberry for the rest of the trip and it was great! We sent the entries as e-mails to my mom and she posted them on our TJ.

There have been a lot of post’s about this topic. Reception seems to be an issue with the PCT while the AT is pretty good. There were a lot of times on my AT hike a cell phone really came in handy. Something like a Blackberry is even better. You can send email, GOOGLE to get information about Hotel’s, Post Offices, etc. You can take decent pictures and transmit. All at a smaller size tan a pocketmail.

I used a Kyocera Q3135 up the PCT and it worked fine with my Pocketmail. I could send and receive emails many times from out in the middle of nowhere on the PCT with a Verizon account. Note you have to set the Q3135 to analog in order to use it with a Pocketmail – highly unlikely it would send digital.
A few times I had to stand on my left foot and face the Verizon Corporate Headquarters in order to get reception but for the most part it gave as best of reception as I could have expected. The bar-signature on the Q3135 gave me a clue on which way to face to get reception and to get the Pocketmail email to go out and to receive Pocketmail emails.
I did most of my PCT journal using a Pocketmail and a Kyocera Q3135 cell phone.
