Is there any poison ivy above 4000 feet? Are there any good trails to the AT or parking place for a 5 days hike on the AT?

Poison ivy in smokies
I haven't seen any poison ivy while hiking in the Smokies.
As far as hiking, you can leave your car at Jeff and Nancy’s Hike Inn. Your vehicle will be safe and watched at all times. They can give you a ride to Clingman’s Dome and you can hike south to Fontana Dam, where they will pick you up. Remember you have to have a permit for the Smokies, call for reservations at the shelters which are very nice.
Or…you can go to Standing Bear Hostel and Curtis can give you a ride to Newfound Gap or Clingman’s Dome and you can hike north right back to his place.
Happy Hiking…

I just did a short hike in N.Ga and up on Tray Mt.(Which is above 4000) There was Poison Ive. I would think it would be in the smokies. The big thing is how it Identify it. I get it bad so I've gottin good at avoiding it. It was everywhere in Ga. Pull up some pics on-line and learn what it looks like. Allot of people mistake it for other stuff. If you hike in shorts put a body cream/lotion on your legs the oils will stick to the cream and not your skin. If you think you touched it rinse off asap.

CL don't work worth a clap! Ditto the above... experts recommend washing with soap immediately. I have slashed it with a machete & pulled it up with gloves on... the result was the same... the juice splashed all over my arms & both times; so beware & completely cover your body if walking thru it, or cutting or pulling it while trail working!

For a 5 day hike you can deal with it when you get home. I got it bad during a thru hike and did not stop to get it under control. The result was 4 trips to the ER, one of which included a 3 day stay in the hosp. Ended up getting something called cellulitus and a stafff infection. Learn what it looks like to avoid it, consider clothing that helps protect, and above all else stop and get it under control if you get it.

i've also been to the emergency room with the awful stuff!.....subman is right, though.....RINSING with water right away (within 10-15 minutes) if you think you've touched it will prevent your breaking out in a rash (i've even used a little splash of my drinking water....or "spit" when i'm desperate! ha ha!).....careful with removing clothing and shoes.....get expert at ID......and if you do get a few bumps (i know this sounds crazy), but "ban" roll-on (the anti-perspirant type) dries it up so quickly, you'll be amazed!...
…as for hikes in the smokies…one of my favorites up to the AT is the loop up from cosby campground to maddron bald!..(i think backpacker magazine voted maddron bald as one of the best hikes in the US!)…you also get to take in albright grove, a virgin forest, and i believe this loop takes about 4 days(?)…it’s beautiful!
