Poor Service at Happy Day Motor Lodge

THRU-HIKER ALERT: In Pearisburg, VA, don’t expect any kind of service with the Happy Day Motor Lodge. My hotel room did not have any hot water and I called the office to let them know. They told me to try again in a 1/2 hour and told me the section of the hotel that they put thru-hikers in didn’t have a large enough hot water heater for the capacity of the rooms. I called them back in 1/2 hour and no one was at the front desk to answer the phone. The next morning I went down to talk to someone about the incident on the way out and asked for a refund, not only was the water freezing cold but there was noise all night from the heavy drinking & party “construction worker” section of the motel. I was told by the hotel attendant at the front desk, “You’re a thru-hiker right? What do you expect, that’s just the way it goes here. You’re out of luck.”
I ended up filing a complaint with the BBB in Virginia, but the hotel still refused to offer any amends for their terrible service.
On the other hand, I stayed at the Rendezous Hotel and received excellent service the night before. Free drinks, lower hotel rate than what was posted in your book, free shuttles up the road into town and to Wal-Mart, all by the owner of the hotel.

every year people have different experiences at different places. One person loves Brenda at her place, another person hates Bruno up in Gorham, Mtn Momma goes both ways… I take these experiences with a grain of salt. I have had great experiences over at Happy Day last year… while Brenda was a little overworked and rude. In 2000 and 2001 Brenda was cool. The bottom line is that some thru hikers are asshol*s and others are cool. These small ma and pa places get to see both the good and bad on the trail. Give them a break, maybe they just had a bad day or week. Maybe you were a little demanding or rude because you felt the level of service wasn’t up to par. Who knows?

At the very least you shouldnt be denied a shower when you stay in any motel no matter what mood the owners are in that day. Most hikers arnt a-holes. A hot shower and the weather channel are likely the only thing they want from a motel. I’m sure thru hikers are less likely to cause a problem that warrents shutting off the hot water to a room, or whatever they did, than some of the trash that blows thru those kinda motels year round. The bottom line is you got ripped off. There’s no magical place thats going to send you over the greenbacks you wasted on the happy motel, and I doubt they’re going to make sure there hiker rooms have hot water when they know they can get away without it.

Just another reason to go hike the A.T. when it’s LESS crowded i.e. October-March!

How many thru-hikers are hotels and stores and such putting up with then? Not many!

October-March? Ahhhhh… the peace and quiet on the trail sounds like heaven.
