Powdered peanut butter

Has anyone had any experience with using powdered peanut butter. I found powdered peanut butter in a store. It's manufactured by Bell Plantations, Inc. It seems to have the oil/fat removed which seems to me to defeat the purpose for backpacking. Any comments?

I purchased a jar of the plain and choc. Haven't tried the plain but did try the choc and it is really good. You have to practice with the water to powder ratio to get the right thickness . Taste just Ike the real stuff.

What is the calorie and fat content, compared to that of regular jar peanut butter?

All I have on hand to compare it to is Great Value crunchy. Serving size 2 Tbsp, Cal 180, cal from fat 130. Total fat 15g. The powdered peanut butter is also 2 Tbsp serving size . Calories 45, fat calories 13 Total fat 1.5g So it looks like about 1/10 the values. I'm far from a nutritionist but it doesn't look like a good weight/calorie ratio.

How many grams does that 2T of ppb (before adding water) weigh? I'll do the math to convert that to calories per ounce. BTW, GreatValue pb has 168 calories per ounce. Laura Scudder's "Natural" is 177 calories per ounce. I prefer the GV 'cause it comes in a light-weight plastic jar. LS is packed in heavy glass jar.

About the only thing that could be removed from pnb to make it powder is fat which is the most calorie dense. I would hunt for weight reduction elsewhere.

I tried it about 8 years ago and did not like it. Lacked the taste and smooth texture of real peanut butter.

Thanks. And right: removing fat (9 kCal / gram) and then adding back water (0 kCal / gallon) makes little sense in terms of carrying the most calories for the lightest load. Even if you didn't actually carry the water to rehydrate with, you'd still be out the extra calories and would need to make those up elsewhere. If the "elsewhere" isn't pure fat, then you end up with either less total calories or a need for more weight.

Found the nutrition facts for PPB. Serving size 1T, 6 grams, 33 calories. That's 156 calories per ounce. Might as well carry the real thing.

We have used powdered PNB on two hikes. We won't use it again after we used up this jar. There is still weight to be carried and it is not much lighter than a 12 oz jar of the real thing. Taste is okay, but if there is no fat there isn't much point to it.
