My understanding is that the prosecution was hung up on a technicality about whether Rice actually used one of the hiker’s calling cards to later make a call. Also heard that there was sufficient evidence for a re-trial at a later date.
I’ve sectioned hiked this area before - don’t view it as any more dangerous than other locations. I believe (may be wrong) the two hikers were overpowered and found tied to a tree(s).
Please, regardless of whether you are solo or in a group, regardless of whether you are male or female, be cautious of others, especially if they do not appear to “fit in.” For that matter, be cautious of anyone.
I think Rice lived in Maryland, closer to Washington, DC than the trail. That does not mean he would not approach the trail in the future - it is anyone’s guess.
My biggest fear in the past has been the security of my car when I section hiked and left it at a road approach. Vandals are (getting) bad throughout the Trail.
Try to be cautious and wary of whenever you are crossing roads or of shelters that are less than a few miles from a road. Those are the areas (I feel) that are most likely to be problems.
I guess hitch-hiking could be viewed as a risk - it just depends on when and where and how many of you there are. As for towns - I don’t worry about safety because there are “strength in numbers” - including good town folk. Walking in civilization after dark or alone always warrants caution.
Just my thoughts - go with your instinct.
