Protective and Fast

What is the best way to carry a digital camera so that it is protected from the elements and easy and fast to take those time sensitive pictures? Thanks

You will almost certainly want to carry your digi in a ziploc, as the AT is a wet trail. A few other hikers I saw even carried a couple of those tiny dessicating packs, like the “freshness packs” that come in vitamin bottles. That should keep it dry.

I found a great form fitting neoprene type case for my camera from this Australian company on Ebay. It’s great because it protects with the most minimal amount of bulk and weight. Of course, it’s not waterproof, but if you’re camera is somewhat weather-resistant and maybe you keep it in a stuff sack or something when it’s wet out, you should be ok. It’s definitely easy to get your camera out quickly because it’s just one zipper and there’s your camera.

The cases are specific to each model, so search your camera on Ebay and you might see it there.

I keep my point-and-shoot digital camera in a standard-size resealable Glad sandwich bag placed in a front pocket. If I fall in a stream it might or might not work (haven’t fallen in that deep yet), but it keeps things dry up to and including torrential downpours. I replace the bag every so often as it gets a bit tattered after a while.

Buy the better quality ziploc bags and have a new one sent with each mail drop because they do wear out. Actually have a handful sent with each maildrop because you can use them for other things as well, carrying you TP, dividing up food/snacks, etc.

For anyone who has not bought a camera yet Pentax makes a nice water resistant 4 megapixel camera. You can even submerge it for a little while. It’s 3x3 inches, but it is heavy for a small camera.

I fit my Pentax Optio S (3.2 mpix) into an Altoids tin I carried in my waistband pocket. Safe from dirt and all moisture except total immersion!

That little weather-proof Pentax is great. I carried it in an open water bottle pouch for my Long Trail hike last summer. I think my feet were dry only on four days that trip, but the Pentax was fine. It weighs 7.5 oz with two AA batteries. I’ve got the 4 megapixel version.
Before I had that camera, I used a Ziplock bag to keep it dry. RockyTrail’s advice to bring or mail extra bags is right on. They get holes in them after a while.
