Public apology to Officer Taco

My soul is in torment.

At Tom Floyd wayside, I accused Officer Taco of Blue or Yellow blazing the A.T. because of a few days of us passing each other and never crossing paths. In haste I made a terrible mistake. O.T. I sincerely hope you accept my apology. To the hiking community and A.T.C., I apologize, for this is an example of the worst ethics of hiker behavior. These registers (p.c.t.a in particular) are stored somewhere, I?m sure, and forever the ass I?ve been will be documented.

Magic

P.s. please-please-please, if someone would mark my entry out of the Tom Floyd wayside register I would be most grateful.

Blessed Dinsmore, let not your soul be unduly tormented on this most Holy day. For the Lord has died for your sins and has arisen, it is a new day for the penitant. Say ten Hail Marys and fast until sunrise. Now, go and sin no more.

Unfortunately this is one of the side effects of the Purism Disease. Someone steps off the trail to relieve themselves. A Purist goes by and all hell breaks loose. Please make sure you go to the bathroom in pairs so one can be a lookout. Remember only you can prevent Purist Fires.

Officer Taco has indeed skipped parts of the AT on his thru-hike. I feel he has the right to do so, however, he doesn’t have the right to proclaim himself as a thru-hiker. A lot of so-called thru-hikers skip parts of the trail. Pennsylvania is famous for being skipped.

I was on that section during the time Officer Taco claimed to be on it. I was going Southbound. I saw no Officer Taco. 45 mile days he is now claiming! Bull… He is just making it up just because he skipped a 100 mile section in Northern Virginia and West Virginia. Like I said, I hope he is enjoying his hike but he is no longer considered a thru-hiker in my book. I’ll go follow some real thru-hikers now.

The way you can always tell a yellow blazer is to check the mileage and look for the inconsistancies. He gets off the trail and catches it 100 miles further and to make up the records, they will log 40-50 mile days! While everyone else that walks with him will notice 15 mile days. Again, here is his journal history.

3/23 - zero
3/24 - zero
3/25 - 15.6
3/26 - 13.4
3/27 - zero
3/28 - zero
3/29 - zero
3/30 - zero
3/31 - zero
4/01 - zero
4/02 - 20.0
4/03 - 18.6 (at a 5mph pace)
4/04 - 15.2 (at a 4mph pace)
The following is totally fictional
4/05 - 35.0
4/06 - 42.4
4/07 - 29.8

Conclusion, he is yellow blazing it.

I’ve somwhat followed this whole fiasco by reading Magic and OT’s journals and reading each others guest books and all the bad mouthing, especially done by the Solemates who are on the trail. Its amazing that there is still so much competition and animosity out on the Trail. Isn’t that what everyone goes out to escape??
Last year 2 thru-hiker made asses of themselves in the registers in Vermont claiming to be the “#1 nobo”. Well CT aka Walking Man passed them both and finished weeks before one while the other one never even finished. Sillyness. Katahdin ain’t goin nowhere last I checked

If people want to turn the AT into a competition that is their right. Everybody says to HYOH and that includes trail Nazi’s and the such. There are people who could make Paint drying on the wall a competition. Just ignore them and enjoy your time out there. My guess is that these purists freaks are few.:bawling

Who Cares???

I absolutely don’t care if anyone any color blazes but based on my reading of Officer Taco’s journal, I doubt very seriously he could tell anything but the truth. It’s a wonderful journal. The most honest account of a hike I think I have ever read.

There is now and there will always be this underlaying clause about who actually covered every mile on there thru hike. 20 years from now this same conversation will be taking place. Who cares? I care. Its a slap in the face to me , when I put out so much effort to “thru hike” the trail and then here comes a bunch of Bozo’s that miss sections but make the claim. I think its just ashame that our society has become a bunch of " do the best you can, its ok" softies. While John Doe is at work busting his butt, theres always the guy in the corner making the same pay but hes always sick or late or didnt show up. In my opinion, people who make the claim but didnt pay the price are no better than that guy in the corner. But it not their fault for cutting corners, I guess its the way they were raised! But then again, its their lie and they have to look in the mirror. HYOH is a cop out if your claiming a thru hike.

Officer Taco’s a very religious guy and also a cop. Those types never lie:)

I found Officer Taco to be an exceptionally nice guy that I can’t imagine would be lying about his hike. He is an very strong young man and and I am not sure SOMEONE is a real person… BUT I know Magic is real and if he is taking back any negative impressions… I would believe him over SOMEONE!!!

Whether he’s lying or not, I disdain the intentional defamation of a journalist, who is busting their butt out there, and still taking the time to share it with everyone. I haven’t read his journal, but I think picking apart his milage is a pretty lame activity. Not all of my mileages are exactly correct. It’s a lot of work to keep track of that stuff and correspond with an outside source to get it on the internet for people to enjoy.

Now he’s going to hear about this and it will probably bum him out a bit. Is that what people want? To send negative feelings to someone, as if they “deserve” it for what they did or didn’t do? Does that make the critics feel better about themselves?

In the words of Robert Zimmerman “Don’t criticize what you can’t understand.”

I’m not sure why I am even wasting my time here but the reason that those miles don’t add up and there are gaps is because the journals haven’t been added yet. my pocletmail finally died on march 22nd. firefighter, there are about 40 boyscouts out there from 4 different troops who were witnesses to the 35, 42, and 30 mile days. your conclusion is wrong pal, those journals will be updated, believe you me. let me know if you ever want to go for a walk.

“with their eyes hypnotized by their desktop calculators, and their hearts in safe deposit boxes” losers from their workstations tried to figure out the validity of someone else’s action in the middle of the woods.

people hike every inch of the trail every year.

People hike parts of the trail and hitchhike parts every year.

People blue blaze parts of the trail every year.

People argue over what other people do every year.

Appalachian traditions. Do you get mad at these people in person when you are out on the trail? what could you say to them? Do it MY way?

Blah ,blah, blah same old drama by little people with no self of their own,who must belittle others to make themselves feel bigger.Isnt it funny that the most venomous writters are anonomous. If you have finnished your thru hike as a purist be proud but not obnoxious, did you hike this hike for yourself or to brag to others.I agree with most here that O.T. seems to be a honest type and a great journalist and i dont think he would lie about his mileage. But you know what?IF he did I wouldnt care because I enjoy his journal(more than I can say for “somebody”).Bottom line hike the trail for yourself not others. And i will also wager that O.T. will be on the trail long after these naysayers are a bad memory. You go O.T.

These trailforums never cease to amaze me. Really, they don’t. I think it is a god aweful shame that people (myself included now that I am writing) feel the urge to digress to such base antics and criticisms, merely retaliate, or try and construct a meaningful response to such shallow behavior.

SOMEONE, whoever you are…I find it disappointing that you cannot identify yourself first, before making such brash comments. Feel free to identify yourself, and man up to your words.

FIREFIGHTER…dude, come on. You really have a lot of time on your hands to wittle away in front of the computer, disect OT’s journal, and hypothesize a contrite little conspiracy theory. Perhaps the best judgement to be made about Ben, should first come after meeting him in person. Then decided if he is telling the truth or not.

It flat out SUCKS that people throw down such libacious comments on this site. It is meant to help other hikers, and be a positive forum for communication. Instead (as this forum did) it has boiled down to a pile of bullshit and people arguing over a person’s hike - with information obtained while sitting on their asses behind a desk.

I personally saw Ben this weekend, he is a close friend, he assited me with my trip that begins in less than 2 weeks. Ben is a great man, a great friend, and an outstanding hiker. He has hiked every friggin’ inch of the trail to this point. So before anyone throws down anymore dramatic insults, go throw on a pack and hump the same damn mountains every other thru-hiker has.

Perhaps the most important thing we should take out from all this nonesense is that we should judge ourselves, our comments, thoughts, and feelings, before we judge, berate, and slander another hiker. Step up to the plate folks and make the AT a real community.

Since I don’t feel like starting a whole new forum I’ll ponder on this one since it is somewhat relevant… So, weren’t most blue blazes once apart of the true AT? If so then how can taking them on occasion be such a crime? I mean if you really believe that anyone who takes some blue blazes shouldn’t be called a thru hiker then does that mean people who hiked it in the past, when todays blue blazes were white, get their thru hiker title revoked? Maybe those people should have to come back out and hike the portions that have since been relocated, then they can have their title back! Right. I guess what I’m saying is I just do not get the whole purist view, it just seems illogical.
