Quick question - Appalachian Trail

I want to hike the AT, but maybe only half. I don’t care where I start. What I want to know is if there is anywhere by the trail I can leave my car for 3 months. Seriously. Is that a fair question?

Here is an entry froim Zero on the subject.

Starting Location: Hotel in Dalton, GA

I drove my truck from a hotel in Dalton, GA to the state park at Amicalola. I went into the visitor center and signed the register. I also received my permit to park my truck here. The permit is good until July 15, 2007! They did not take my picture here. I thought they would.
When I was signing up: the lady working the desk coughed really bad & said be careful because she just got over pnuemonia. She said this, as she handed me the pen to sign the register. I was thinking “Great, starting the AT in January & Im going to get pnuemonia”.
Anyway, I went out to my truck and smoked my last Camel cigarette.

Zero did not finish for almost a year. Actually he never finished. Big K was closed when he got there ion late November. After 6 months he arranged someone to call and extend his stay. When he finished the truc k was still there.

So you got a permit and resgistered at the state park in amicalola. Left the truck at the visitor center. Came back 6 months later and it was still there? Is that right?
If that’s what someone else did that’s probably what I’ll do then.

I think this came up before and if I remember correctly the recommendation was that you disconnect your battery, put a cover over the car to protect it and store an emergency air pump to inflate your tires after you return. Anyone remember anything else?

That is correct only he just checked ion by phone after six months and asked to hold it six more months. They said OK. He returned and got his truck in November. It stayed there about eleven months.

Hey Ariel, you can also park in the auxiliary lot at Dartmouth University in Hanover, NH. You can notify campus parking through the Outing Club and leave your car indefinitely. Good luck!

if i left for the amicolola state park november, say the 10th, got there the 11th, could i register and get a permit that day and leave my car for the big hike the 12th?
what i’m getting at i guess, is some places only issue permits certain times of the year and what not.

I’ve heard about some people doing winter hikes on the AT, but what you are proposing starting Nov 12 and hiking half of the AT sounds like you must enjoy freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. Good Luck

Walking north from November will be brutal to say the least if attempting to do half the AT. Leave word where you can as to your whereabouts to a least one very concerned close person. You might just well become part of the Roan landscape forever…
