I understood the shelter would be taken down in 2005 but when on the trail I heard that it is down now (June, 2004). Anybody know for sure? Are they going to replace anything near it?

sorry Joe, I passed Raccoon branch shelter and hiked up to Trmpi, there was a significant path worn to Raccoon Branch shelter, which would always lead me to believe that it is still there.
I did a quick search and Wildcat stayed there along with quite a few of my other March 1st starting buds, so it was there when I went thru.

We passed Racoon Branch last week. Its just a pile of lumber at this point.
The new Hurricane Mt. Shelter is open… Very nice!

was when the new Hurricane Shelter was open, the old Raccoon Branch Shelter would be demolished. They started working on Hurricane just before Trail Days, so I’m not surprised if it’s finished now and Raccoon is history. Would also explain that this year’s early hikers were able to use Raccoon.
