Rain Jacket/Wind Shirt

I was counting on my Epic weather jacket from Big Sky International. It has turned out to be so much vapor gear and will not make it by July 25th. The factory is having zipper problems. This company has a death wish, I think. My tent pegs ordered last fall, are in transit, however, and are expected along with some complimentary guy lines for my patience. I at least have my tent which arrived on the slow boat from china a few months ago.

Anyway. Need recommendation for light rain jacket/wind shirt. I have to act fast as I am leaving in 15 days. I was thinking of running over to REI and picking up a Marmot Precip. I don’t know the weight however. Anyone have a Precip XL they could weigh and let me know weight.

What would you bring?

I, too, am looking for new rain gear. It appears that the Precip comes in at 13 oz. Frogg Toggs have been highly recommended but I do not have a weight on them.
Have fun and stay dry. I will be watching this thread to see what you find.

Google “Pro Mountain Sports” and look at what they offer–they specialize in ultalight–and they have rain (8 oz) and wind (2.4 oz) jackets so light you won’t believe it.

Every once in a while I revisit that site just to get my bearings back as to what’s possible.

While there, check out their 7 pound base weight pack, again, as a frame of reference.

Sincerely–Conan.

Gossamer gear makes a micropore rain suit that is super light. Looks like it’s very similar to Frogg Toggs but less expensive. Should last 1-2 seasons as per the website. Weight for a large is L: 5.3/4.0 oz. (jacket/pants). Price $27.

Check out the Essence Jacket by Marmot. www.marmot.com. it only weighs 7oz. and is waterproof. Not much more money than the REI Element and a lot lighter compared to 13oz. My husband and I both carry one. I know you can order one from rei.com. along with other internet sites.

Thanks for the suggestions. Pro Mountain Sports was a great resource. That lead me to making a decision to use Integral Designs eVent Rain jacket. Regularly $220.00 it was on sale with free shipping at $189.98 at Prolite Gear. The XL comes in a 9.5 oz.

I cancelled my order with Big Sky International.

This is turning out to be the tale of the three bears. Too late, too small, too much. The eVent jacket ordered Sunday night arrived Tuesday. Wow. What service. You can’t be too rich, too thin, or have too many rain jackets. As to being too thin, I am not, and the Integral Design eVent jacket was too snug. I cannot add a second layer under it. It goes back. The XL weighed 10 oz.

I took up the suggestion to order the Marmot Essence. On sale from Backcountry.com. I got discontinued color, took a $10.00 discount for paying by Google and paid $101.96, just over what the Precip price is at REI. Now I hope this one is “just right.” I have tried on the Precip and that fits just right. I paid 4.40 for Priority Mail.
