Chairman, I got rid of my rain suit, and replaced it with the Golite Poncho. The Golite Poncho is light weight, and can also be set up as a shelter. It is also extra long to help protect your backpack. To see more go to trailjournals/DreamWalker GA.>ME. 2011 and click on gear.

I'm a poncho man myself, as well. I prefer the $1 'emergency' lightweight variety: its the lightest, cheapest and most easily replaced. I've used ponchos on AT, PCT, CDT, and other thru-hikes. If your pack is small enough, you won't even need a pack cover anymore – it will fit under the poncho. Waterproof (plastic) & quite breathable from the open skirt-like bottom... The only downside Is in high winds – a little bit of the 'Marilyn Monroe effect:)

with a litewait poncho, you can use any quick drying pants if it's cold. if it's windy, perhaps you can use rubber bands to keep poncho from flapping over your head !
