Did Rainbow Springs Campground close? If so what is going on with the property? Did someone else open another campground there?
Thanks

From what I have heard from other hikers, (and this is by no means confirmed), the property was sold to a developer. I do know that they set up a camp near Albert Mountain and were taking care of north bounders this spring with beans and rice!!
Talk about a giving group of people. It was as though all hikers were treated like family…
My wife and I have had several positive experiences staying at the campground. Our favorite spot is down on the Nantahala River. I loved their sign out front
“Come a camper-leave a friend”…
Frasier Fir
Beans and rice and soda and coffee . . . everything a growing thru-hiker needs
But there is a downside . . . or rather, an upside . . . it’s called Albert Mt. Careful of how much you eat. Don’t be like Thatch, who consumed six burritos, then tackled the mountain in great heat (great for April).

I really enjoyed my time there last year. The Yurt was only $15 a night and the owners were cordial. It’s such a great location from there to hike the Standing Indian area with places like Kinseys Creek and of course the AT places like Silers Bald…I even drove my truck to Wayah Bald…what a rocky ride…but fun because I stopped at all the places I had stopped at a year before. It will be missed by me…I had planned to go back. Doc

Rainbow Springs has been sold to a developer. When my wife and I heard that they had closed, we started looking for a new place close to the trail, and close to the former Rainbow Springs. We have just moved in and are slowly getting settled. We have plans to try and open a new Hostile in the Spring of 2006. We are located just about 1500 yards from the trail, so we hope we will be convient for everyone. We are very excited about this opprotunity.
We hope to see you in 2006. Keep watching this site for future information on “The Groaning Hill Hostile”. Until 2006 we will still be “hiding” magic on the trail between Standing Indian and Wayah Bald, so keep your eyes peeled.

That would be “hostel,” unless you plan on driving away your customers by being belligerent. I think a hostel would be great. I always thought that the Franklin area needed one.

Keep the name Groaning Hill Hostile. Those not smart enough to catch the humor can stay at at a Holiday Inn Express.
But seriously I applaud the former owners of Rainbow Springs for putting something in there that us “poor” people can afford. Hopefully a Yurt will be a part of the new Hostile.
Hostile…haha…I love it. I hate political correctness.
