Raincoat - The Colorado Trail

I will be thru hiking the CT again this summer with my dog Denver. I was wondering what is the best, cheapest raincoat that someone would recommend. I know you get what you pay for but like most everyone else funds are limited.

Thanks

If you check Big R, you may find something like the Marmot Precip for about half the price.

I’ve used Big R or surplus store budget jackets for years–Red Ledge I think is the brand. Nominally breathable, durable, less than a pound, around $40 and they work OK.

Many hikers use Frogg Toggs. They aren’t too durable and I haven’t tried them.

I used Frogg Togg Dri-ducks rain jacket and pants. They are very light and cheap, but not breathable. I only really wore them on 4 or 5 occasions during rain showers, but I used them nearly every morning for warmth while I ate breakfast.

They are not very durable, but unless you are bushwacking with them, I’d guess they’d be fine for a couple thousand miles. For the $20 or $25 that I spend on them, I’m a happy customer.

I agree with Loup, I used Dri-ducks on my hike, wore them frequently. They ARE breathable. Mine have a few poieces of duct tape on them, but would be fine for a second thru hike.

Actually DriDucks are among the most breathable rain jackets on the market, typically moreso than expensive jackets using GoreTex or equivalent. Only eVent gives DriDucks and its nearest facsimile - 02 Rainshield - a run for its money, but you’ll also spend a whole lot more for that, which is money you could instead spend on a couple backup sets of DD’s for when they inevitably wear out.

FroggToggs branded rain jackets (FroggToggs also mfr’s DriDucks) are slightly heavier than DriDucks, slightly less breathable, somewhat warmer due to having a bit of “pile,” somewhat more expensive, and quite a bit more durable.

In general, the “get what you pay for” adage doesn’t readily apply to rain wear, or much of backpacking gear for that matter. It’s more complicated than that. First you need to decide what you want, then you need to figure out what product is offering that. Look at price tags last, rather than first.

DriDucks are the best. Period. I have tried all the others and nothing beats the DriDucks. True, you have to treat them gently and don’t go bushwacking through thick brambles. They don’t cost much and, are light, very breathable and don’t wet through in steady downpours.
