Re- Supply? - Continental Divide Trail

How and where do most people re-supply? Is it more convenient to send a box ahead like with the AT, or just to buy in town? Any comments, suggestions appreciated.

You can resupply as you go, but there are a few places where sending yourself a box is easier, like Doc Campbells in the Gila, Pie Town, Benchmark Ranch, etc. A discussion on the subject can be read at http://spiriteaglehome.com/cdt06_miles.html

Yogi wrote a great guide about this . Just Google Yogi’s trail guides.

I had all my boxes mailed for my AT & PCT hikes… but did almost all of my resupply myself on the CDT despite the apparent sparsity of good trail towns… on the CDt, I bought my food in Bozeman which had both supermarkets, a COOP healthfoodstore, new & used gear shops, a great hostel (with a bike I donated that subsequently got stolen), & was centrally located in Montana. My method is to mail 2 drift/bounce boxes to the next 2 trail towns… priority if you are arriving soon or if you might need to be able to forward it for free… each box has a half sized box & tape & labels inside… then I mail the half box including any extra gear or food I might get in the 1st trail town… I leapfrog it over to the 3rd trail town; then when I get to the 2nd trail town, I send that half box to the 4th trail town… thus, just using a few trail cities to buy your resupply, you can cover all your trail towns in an efficient manner… I used Bozeman, Rawlins, Denver, Chama/Grants etc… I suspect the same is possible on the At & PCT, though perhaps with smaller cities.

Southbounders probably don’t need to do this, but if you are NB on the CDT, you could take a Greyhound bus from Grants to Albuquerque, especially if you need some better gear or better trail food. NM towns had pretty good supermarkets, if you normally buy what they sell.
