Me and a couple of buddies are planning a hike during mid march. we’re planning to do something like 6-7 days worth. we live around new york city area, does anyone have any reccomendations where a good/scenic place might be from their past experiences?

preferably not too far. i’ve heard lots of good things about deleware water gap area…

south of Delaware Water Gap is fairly flat but very rocky. North of there isn’t too bad. I really liked New York just past the southern border, some nice forests and a good mix of trail and boulder scrambles–a lot of fun.

You could do a loop on the AT and Mohawk Trail in northwest Connecticut. I did it last spring over a few days. Went south from Salisbury on the AT, then south on the Mohawk (which is the old AT and very scenic), and then north on the AT back to my car. You could stretch this into a week by starting farther north on the AT (in Mass.) or going the opposite way from points south (maybe Kent area?). It’s a fairly easy hike by AT standards.

mohawk sounds good…but it’s going to be mid-march…isn’t it fairly cold up north?
i don’t mind the cold, i just promsied my friends who never even hiked in their lives a good time.
tough hikes are fun too, they’re all military boys

yes! i agree with 0101!..we loved new york!..but that “march thing”…i dunno about bouldering in NY if it’s icy…delaware water gap is pretty, too(if the weather wasn’t icy or snowy you could begin with the challenge at palmerton out of leigh high gap…difficult…but there’s an alternate route if you need)…the “sages ravine” area in massachusetts is a real beauty and was one of our favorites, say from somewhere like sharon mtn. or even kent,CT…((the “10-mile river” area in connecticut is also REALLY pretty…but still that winter weather thing is still buggin’ me…maybe you could drive down to VA…“the three ridges”/“priest” area is awesome but challenging, but MIGHT be a bit warmer…if you could at all, i would HIGHLY recommend a drive down to the northeast section of tennessee!..say from erwin to dennis cove(hampton,tn)…that way you’d get to experience two of the best hostels on the trail, too! (and the help and hospitality of “miss janet” and “bob and pat peoples”!..the area is absolutely gorgeous!..then of course there’s “the grayson highlands” (just past damascus,VA)…AWESOME!..but again in march it can be very much WINTERTIME!..on march22 this year we spent the night in what seemed like a freezer at the thomas knob shelter (one of our favorites!), but boy!..were we COLD!..i’d say just pack your WINTER GEAR and head out to any of these places…even SOUTHERN pennsylvania with all its rocks is lovely (i think)…maw-ee

Ah, thank you so much for that input. I’ll take it all into consideration. tennessee might be pushing it though… but definitely, we’re up for challenge!
