I just got out of the canyon the 18th of Jan. I went in on Dec 30th. It was the coldest of all my canyon hikes but on the whole weather was great, If you like going to bed at 6 PM! Billy Goat even spent 7 nights with me. Going in on the 30th and again on the 11th i went down the BA trail. Coming out the 18th i did not need crampons. Remember the new snow fills all the holes caused by the mules and makes for a better smoother trail.
I understand that a new campsite for AZ folks is being made at Phantom Ranch so check this info out before you leave.
I return to the canyon on 2/16 for 7 nights then out to the rim for 2 nights to resupply then on the 25th will go down the Hermit for 8 nights. Remember if you get that far to be in the canyon on the AZ you can mail a food box to yourself at Phantom Ranch.

Meadow Ed, I did one week on the Grand Canyon during January of 2000 and found it one of the best hiking trips I ever took. While it did get cold on the rim and almost immediately when the sun went down I thought the day time temps were perfect and of course yu can’t beat the scenery. I would get up every morning, pack immediately and hike out to the main part of the canyon to have breakfast in the sun hanging my feet over the canyon wall from the Tonto plateau. In the week that I was down there I saw two other pairs of backpackers until I got to the Bright Angel trail which had a smattering of dayhikers and mule riders. January is a perfect time to hike in the Canyon IMHO.

I already had temps in the 80’s on day three of my hike, luckily it cooled after after that. I kind of like this winter hiking so far. Frost on my tent at night but nice during the day.
