Recommend a 5-6 day section hike no further north than Damascus

I am looking to do a section of the trail around mid-June. With travel time to and from the trail, I can not spend any more than 6 days on the trail.

My suggestion would be the SMNP. Where ever you go have fun…

Don’t know your mileage requirements but this will get you over the Balds and Roan Mt, and a night @ Kincora.

I’d really like to do that section but I don’t like the idea of 20 mile days which I would have to do in order to complete that section in six days.

Not sure what you are looking for in terms of vistas, terrain, traffic, but the Smokies are pretty busy in June. One of my favorite sections of the AT (to which I return at least once per year) runs from Damascus to Marion. It has everything - good water, flat walking, balds, highest point in VA, ponies, wooded areas, rhododendron tunnels, craggy rock outcroppings, a few nice shelters, you name it!

Life is like a box of CROClettes.

northeast tenn. has EVERYTHING!..what about starting up at roan mtn? (at carver’s gap)…that should knock off a few miles and the area is awesome!..(can’t remember…are the azaleas or rhodys in bloom there in june?)…anyway, i’d agree with bluebearee and FG…even a short break at kincora will give a great little “taste” of trail life…and the balds are oooh la la!..you can check out our journal for pics if you want (2006…maw-ee and paw-ee…beginning around day 29 or so…)…you’re gonna have a blast!..and as long as you’re in the area, you might as well drive on up after your 6 days to grayson highlands for a little jaunt before you head back home…

Eric G. It is Smoky Mountains National Park.
Grammar Coach. I agree with you to form the plural of nouns ending in y, drop the y and add “ies.” Family becomes families, Story becomes stories and Baby becomes babies. Smoky is an adjective to describe Mountains.
However, an adjective can sometimes function as a noun; the young, the rich, smokey, etc. These are Adjectival Nouns, meaning the people who are young, the people who are rich, mountains that are smokey, etc.
Smokys is used in relationship to GSMNP.
Go figure, ‘Mountain Moma’s’ is located just outside the Smokys/Smokies. Most people would spell that ‘Momma’s’.

SRSFSU - I’m going to have to agree with maw-ee on this topic. Hiking the balds in June is fabulous. You can get some easy miles in, take in some great views, stay up at night looking at the stars, and really get a good feel for the trail. The rhododendrons will be blooming in Grayson-Highlands mid-June to early-July.

I decided I will be hiking from Damascus to Atkins. Can’t wait. Should be a blast.
