Reconditioning rainwear

I used a Patagonia Dragonfly lightweight pullover rainshirt for winter hiking last year and was pleased with its ability to keep light-moderate rain away from me. When I hiked again in October (after having washed it inbetween) I discovered that even in a light drizzle, I quickly became drenched. It evidently had lost its ability to repel the rain. What’s the best way to waterproof it again? Should I not have washed it?

What did the cleaning instructions say? You might have success by washing it again in Nikwax Tech Wash or Sport Wash by SnoSeal (cheaper). Then use any of the wash-in Nikwax products formulated for re-proofing or use a spray on like Tectron, Revive, etc.

Ask someone knowledgeable at the gear store for help if you are in a hurry. The reason I would suggest re-washing the shirt, and rinsing it a couple of times is that you want to get rid of any left over substances from the wrong detergent. Sometimes pressing with a warm iron, or tumbling in a warm dryer will renew the DWR (durable water repellant) finish. The use and care tab in the shirt should tell you about that, too. Well, you could always call customer service at Patagucci for advice, too. Good luck! :tongue

We use Techwash also. There is one for down products, fleece and breathable stuff like Gore. It leaves a sort of waxy feel on fleece but rain rolls right off and will shed water if you just shake it once. Patagucci, that’s funny.

Lady Di is exactly correct, however she forgot to say that the Snowseal will stop all breathability. NikWax will not.
