Recovery time after surgery

I did not do a forum search but I doubt this subject comes up very often,
I had bypass surgery 4 weeks ago and would like to know if anyone else has had surgery and gone back out on the trail. What was your time from surgery to stepping off? What discomfort did you experience and how did you compensate. I had been seriously looking at a March 2010 start date but don’t think it’s going to be in the realm of possibility for 2010 unless it’s a late start.

Hi Charlie,

Congrats on wanting to hike the AT after your by-pass surgery. I can’t offer any medical advice but I can share with you my personal experience.

Before hiking the AT I had heart surgery (a pacemaker) to treat my frequently slow heart rate (below 40 bpm). Sometimes my heart would stop completely for a short while before starting up again. After the surgery I felt very defeated and thought I would never be able to live an active life.

A couple of months after surgery I decided to try going on a long walk. Once I allowed myself this possibility (which seemed like an impossibility not too long ago), I found myself in Baxter State Park at the beginning of the AT. Hiking southbound it took 7 months (from July 1st to almost February) to reach Springer Mountain.

The AT became a wonderful and healing journey for me. I felt better walking in the woods instead of being at home.

I wish you only the best on your recovery. And on your hiking journey, wherever life’s path may take you.
